An impressive English lesson
(答案请填写大写英文字母)

A) If I am the only parent who still corrects his child’s English, then perhaps my son is right. To him, I am a tedious oddity: a father he is obliged to listen
答:如果我是唯一一个仍然纠正孩子英语的父母,那么也许我的儿子是对的。对他来说,我是一个乏味的怪人:一个他不得不倾听的父亲
to
and a man absorbed in the rules of grammar, which my son seems allergic to.
一个沉迷于语法规则的人,我儿子似乎对语法规则过敏。

B) I think I got serious about this only recently when I ran into one of my former students, fresh from an excursion to Europe. "How was it? " I asked, full of earnest anticipation.
B)我想我最近才开始认真对待这个问题,当时我遇到了我以前的一个学生,刚从欧洲旅行回来。“怎么样?”我满怀殷切期待地问道。

C) She nodded three or four times, searched the heavens for the right words, and then exclaimed, "It was, like, whoa!".
C)她点了三四次头,在天空中寻找正确的词语,然后惊呼道:“就像,哇!

D) And that was it. The civilization of Greece and the glory of Roman architecture were captured in a condensed non-statement. My student’s "whoa!" was exceeded only by my distress.
D) 就是这样。希腊的文明和罗马建筑的辉煌被浓缩在一句简短的非陈述中。我的学生的“哇!”只有我的痛苦超过了我。

E) In the United States, there are many different stories about the downturn in the proper use of English. Surely, students should be able to distinguish between their, there and they’re or the distinctive difference between complimentary and complementary. However, they unfairly bear the bulk of the criticism for these knowledge deficits just because there is a public opinion that they should know better.
E)在美国,关于正确使用英语的低迷,有许多不同的故事。当然,学生应该能够区分他们的、那里和他们,或者互补和互补之间的区别。然而,他们不公平地承受了对这些知识缺陷的大部分批评,仅仅因为有一种公众舆论认为他们应该知道得更好。

F) Students are not dumb, but they are being misled. For example, signs in grocery stores point them to the stationary, even though the actual stationery items – pads, albums, and notebooks – are not nailed down. Friends and loved ones often proclaim they’ve just ate when, in fact, they’ve just eaten. Therefore, it doesn’t make any sense to criticize our students.
F) 学生不是傻子,而是被误导了。例如,杂货店的标志将它们指向文具,即使实际的文具物品(便本、相册和笔记本)没有确定。朋友和亲人经常宣称他们刚刚吃过东西,而实际上他们刚刚吃过东西。因此,批评我们的学生没有任何意义。

G) In a sense, schools should be blamed for the scandal of this language deficit because they should have set high standards of English language proficiency. Instead, they only teach a little grammar and even less advanced vocabulary. Moreover, some teachers don’t pay much attention to these vital structures of language because they also went without exposure to them. Schools fail to adequately teach the essential framework of language, accurate grammar and proper vocabulary, while they should take the responsibility of pushing the young onto the path of competent communication.
G)从某种意义上说,学校应该为这种语言缺陷的丑闻负责,因为他们应该为英语语言能力设定高标准。相反,他们只教一点语法,甚至不太高级的词汇。此外,一些教师不太关注这些重要的语言结构,因为他们也没有接触过它们。学校未能充分教授语言的基本框架、准确的语法和适当的词汇,而他们应该承担起推动年轻人走上合格沟通道路的责任。

H) Since grammar is kind of boring to most of the young students, I think that it must be handled delicately, step by step. The chance came when one day I was driving with my son. As we set out on our trip, he noticed a bird in jerky flight and said, "It’s flying so unsteady." I carefully asked, "My son, how is the bird flying?" "What’s wrong? Did I say anything incorrectly?" he got lost. "Great! You said incorrectly instead of incorrect. We use adverbs to describe verbs. Therefore, it’s flying so unsteadily but not so unsteady."

I) Curious about my correction, he asked me what an adverb was. Slowly, I said, "It’s a word that tells you something about a verb." It led to his asking me what a verb was. I explained, "Verbs are action words; for example, Dad drives the truck. Drive is the verb because it’s the thing Dad is doing."
I) 对我的纠正感到好奇,他问我什么是副词。慢慢地,我说,“这个词告诉你一些关于动词的事情。这导致他问我什么是动词。我解释说:“动词是动作词;例如,爸爸开卡车。驱动是动词,因为这是爸爸正在做的事情。

J) He became attracted to the idea of action words, so we listed a few more: fly, swim, dive, run. Then, out of his own curiosity, he asked me if other words had names for their use and functions. This led to a discussion of nouns, adjectives, and articles. Within the span of a 10-minute drive, he had learned to recognize the
J) 他被动作词的想法所吸引,所以我们又列出了几个:飞行、游泳、潜水、跑步。然后,出于他自己的好奇心,他问我是否有其他词的用法和功能的名称。这导致了对名词、形容词和冠词的讨论。在 10 分钟的车程内,他学会了识别
major parts of speech from scratch: verbs, adverbs, nouns, and adjectives. It was painless learning and great fun!
从头开始的主要词性:动词、副词、名词和形容词。这是一次轻松的学习,非常有趣!

K) Perhaps, language should be looked upon as a road map and a valuable possession. Learners should often study the road map (check grammar) and tune up the car engine (adjust vocabulary). Learning grammar and a good vocabulary is just like driving with a road map in a well-conditioned car.
K) 也许,语言应该被看作是路线图和宝贵的财产。学习者应该经常学习路线图(检查语法)并调整汽车发动机(调整词汇)。学习语法和良好的词汇量就像在一辆条件良好的汽车中驾驶路线图一样。

L) The road map provides guidance on your trip, but it won’t tell you exactly what trees or flowers you will see, what kind of people you will encounter, or what types of feelings you will experience on your journey. Here, the vocabulary makes the journey’s true colors come alive! A good vocabulary enables you to enjoy whatever you see as you drive along. Equipped with grammar and a good vocabulary, you have flexibility and excellent control. While the road map guides your journey to your destination, an excellent vehicle helps you to fully enjoy all of the sights, sounds, and experiences along the way.
L)路线图为你的旅行提供了指导,但它不会确切地告诉你你会看到什么样的树或花,你会遇到什么样的人,或者你会在旅途中体验到什么样的感受。在这里,词汇让旅程的本色栩栩如生!一个好的词汇量可以让你在开车时享受你所看到的一切。配备语法和良好的词汇量,您具有灵活性和出色的控制力。虽然路线图会引导您前往目的地,但一辆出色的车辆可以帮助您充分享受沿途的所有景象、声音和体验。

M) Effective, precise, and beneficial communication depends upon grammar and a good vocabulary, the two essential assets in learning a language, but unfortunately, they are not fully taught in schools.
M) 有效、准确和有益的沟通取决于语法和良好的词汇量,这是学习语言的两个基本资产,但不幸的是,它们在学校没有得到充分教授。

N) Just this morning, my son and I were eating breakfast when I attempted to add milk to my tea. "Dad," he said, "if I were you, I wouldn't do that. It's sour."
N) 就在今天早上,我和儿子在吃早餐时,我试图在茶中加入牛奶。“爸爸,”他说,“如果我是你,我不会那样做。太酸了。

O) "Oh my!" I said, swelling with pride toward my son. "That’s a grammatically perfect sentence. You used
O) “天哪!我说,对儿子感到骄傲。“这是一个语法完美的句子。你用了
were instead of was."
的。

P) “I know, I know,” he said with a long agreeable sigh. “It’s the subjunctive mood.”
P)“我知道,我知道,”他长长地叹了口气说。“这是虚拟语气。”

Q) I was, like, whoa!

Malcolm X 是一位非裔美国民权活动家、作家和演说家。他出生于1925年,1965年神秘遇刺身亡。到他去世时,他自己讲述的人生故事《马尔科姆 X 自传》已广为人知。他出生于马尔科姆·利特尔(Malcolm Little)的一个贫困家庭。后来,他在加入一个宗教组织后取名为马尔科姆 X。

Malcolm X learned about the organization while in prison for committing criminal acts such as theft. Because he was poorly educated, he felt inadequate to teach his new beliefs to others. As a young man, he could sketch his thoughts with poor grammar and little vocabulary using the simple, unsophisticated language of people on the street. As an adult, when he tried to inform people about his new beliefs, he found that he didn’t have the adequate communication skills he needed. In his own words, he “wasn’t even functional”.
马尔科姆 X 在因盗窃等犯罪行为入狱时了解到该组织。由于他受教育程度低,他觉得自己不足以将自己的新信仰传授给别人。作为一个年轻人,他可以用街上人们简单、朴素的语言,用糟糕的语法和很少的词汇勾勒出他的想法。成年后,当他试图向人们介绍他的新信仰时,他发现自己没有足够的沟通技巧。用他自己的话说,他“甚至没有功能”。

In a bid to increase his knowledge and improve his skills, desperate Malcolm X devised a scheme. He turned to books, believing this would be beneficial. However, when he tried to read serious books on his own, he was distressed as he didn’t know most of the words. To speed up his language learning scheme, he skipped all the words he didn’t know and then would end up with no clue as to what the book was about. “I became frustrated,” Malcolm X wrote in his autobiography, speaking of his inadequate language skills.
为了增加他的知识和技能,绝望的马尔科姆X设计了一个计划。他转向书籍,相信这将是有益的。然而,当他试图自己阅读严肃的书籍时,他很苦恼,因为他不认识大部分单词。为了加快他的语言学习计划,他跳过了所有他不认识的单词,然后最终对这本书的内容一无所知。“我变得很沮丧,”马尔科姆X在他的自传中写道,谈到他的语言能力不足。

Malcolm X’s considerable frustration at his inability to read and write launched him on a quest to overcome his deficiencies. He said, “I saw that the best thing I could do was get hold of a dictionary – to study, to learn some words.” And he was also lucky enough to reason that he should try to improve his handwriting. “It was sad. I couldn’t even write in a straight line,” he told us. These ideas together moved him to appeal to the prison authorities for some paper and pencils.
Malcolm X 对自己无法阅读和写作感到非常沮丧,这使他开始寻求克服自己的缺陷。他说:“我看到我能做的最好的事情就是拿起一本字典——学习,学习一些单词。他也很幸运地认为他应该努力改进他的笔迹。“这很可悲。我甚至不能直线写作,“他告诉我们。这些想法共同促使他向监狱当局呼吁提供一些纸和铅笔。

For the first two days, Malcolm X just skimmed through the pages of the dictionary, trying to negotiate his way through its unfamiliar format. He told us of his amazement at how closely related the words seemed – how moist could be the root of moisture, and how advisable and advisory had the same root! “I didn’t know which words I needed to learn,” he said. “Finally, just to start some kind of action, I began copying.” In his slow, careful, and crude handwriting, Malcolm X copied everything on the first full page of the dictionary into a notebook. He even copied the quotation marks! This took him one full day. After that, he read everything he had written aloud. “Over and over, aloud, to myself, I read my own handwriting,” Malcolm recalled. He also logged important things that happened every day. Repetition helped move him from basic literacy toward true proficiency.

Malcolm X depicted how, the next morning when he woke up, he kept thinking about the words he had copied and read aloud and about the acquisition of the knowledge he was pursuing. It was a marvelous feeling. He felt immensely proud.
马尔科姆X描述了第二天早上醒来时,他如何不断思考他抄写并大声朗读的单词,以及他所追求的知识的获得。这是一种奇妙的感觉。他感到无比自豪。

He was so fascinated that he went on copying the next page of the dictionary. Once again,
他非常着迷,以至于他继续抄写字典的下一页。再来一次
he awoke, proud and energized. With every succeeding page he copied and read aloud, Malcolm X found he was learning and remembering more and more words. With each successive day, his confusion diminished.
他醒来时,感到自豪和精力充沛。随着他复制和大声朗读的每一页,Malcolm X 发现他正在学习和记住越来越多的单词。随着时间的流逝,他的困惑逐渐减少。

As Malcolm X’s word base broadened, he began to better understand the books he read. It was the first time in his life this had ever happened. “Anyone who has read a great deal can imagine the new world that opened.” From then until he left that prison, his concentration was focused on reading. He was so absorbed in it that months passed without his even thinking about being in prison. “In fact, up to then, I had never been so truly free in my life.”
随着Malcolm X的词汇基础扩大,他开始更好地理解他读过的书。这是他有生以来第一次发生这种情况。“任何读过很多书的人都可以想象打开的新世界。从那时起,直到他离开那所监狱,他的注意力都集中在阅读上。他全神贯注于此,几个月过去了,他甚至没有想过要坐牢。“事实上,在那之前,我这辈子从来没有这么真正自由过。”

“I knew right there in prison that reading had changed forever the course of my life,” Malcolm X wrote. He described how one day a writer telephoned him from London for an interview. The interviewer asked Malcolm X what college he had graduated from as he could write so fluently. He told the Englishman that his personal university was “books”.
“我在监狱里就知道,阅读已经永远改变了我的人生轨迹,”马尔科姆X写道。他描述了有一天,一位作家从伦敦打电话给他接受采访。面试官问Malcolm X他从哪所大学毕业,因为他能写得这么流利。他告诉英国人,他的个人大学是“书”。

Malcolm X’s life is a wonderful example of the profound effect of learning a language. He was born into a world full of poverty and ignorance. However, as he acquired knowledge, his horizons expanded. He had left behind the narrow, ignorant world of his youth to join the world community of thoughts and actions ever since he started with his great journey of learning in prison.

A Proposal for the Orientation Program
迎新会提案

Dear school leaders,

To help freshmen adjust to our university life and ease their transition into college, as a sophomore from Medical School, I propose that an orientation program should be offered.
为了帮助新生适应我们的大学生活并轻松过渡到大学,作为医学院的二年级学生,我建议应该提供迎新计划。

The suggested details are as follows. First and foremost, considering the COVID-19 pandemic, the program combines online courses that students must complete before the start of classes on September 8th with offline activities to be held in our gym or playground from September 1st to 7th. The virtual program will contain an introduction to the various resources and opportunities available to freshmen, including academic support, health and security knowledge, and a welcome speech addressed by school leaders, etc. For the offline activities, there will be military training which is an opportunity for freshmen to socialize with each other while further engaging with campus faculty and staff. Finally, all freshmen are required to participate in and complete the orientation program.

Through this program, I believe, first-year students will lay the groundwork for future learning, exploration and social networking.
我相信,通过这个项目,一年级学生将为未来的学习、探索和社交网络奠定基础。

Yours sincerely,
此致

Li Ming
