In recent years, the development of smart-home technologies, driven by advancements in the Internet of Things (IoT), 5G networks, and artificial intelligence (AI), has become increasingly prominent in China, transforming the way people interact with their living environments. However, despite rapid technological progress, many smart-home solutions have struggled to achieve widespread adoption in the Chinese market. The primary issue lies in the prioritization of technology over user experience (UX), resulting in unmet user needs and expectations. Complex setups, limited compatibility with existing systems, and unintuitive interfaces have led to consumer frustration, hindering broader market acceptance. Improving UX is crucial for increasing adoption rates and addressing the evolving behaviors of Chinese consumers. While previous research has primarily focused on technical aspects like network connectivity, device interoperability, and security, there is a lack of research addressing the specific UX challenges in the Chinese market, particularly in terms of usability, flexibility, and the integration of local cultural factors into product design. Tailored research is needed to better understand and address these challenges.

Research question

The goal of this seminar paper is to explore how the UX of smart-home solutions can be optimized to better meet the needs of Chinese consumers by addressing current challenges and proposing design improvements that enhance usability, flexibility, and overall user satisfaction, ultimately leading to broader acceptance in the Chinese market. The research will focus on the question: how can the UX of smart-home solutions be improved to increase their acceptance and usability among Chinese consumers? The hypotheses for empirical research include: (1) smart-home solutions with more intuitive interfaces and simplified setup processes will see higher adoption rates; (2) privacy and data security features that align with Chinese regulations and consumer concerns will positively influence the adoption of these technologies; and (3) Chinese consumers are more likely to adopt smart-home solutions that offer seamless compatibility with widely used local platforms and services, such as WeChat and Alipay.

Methods

This research will utilize a multi-method approach to thoroughly investigate the UX challenges and opportunities in China's smart-home market. First, a structured survey will be administered to a sample of Chinese consumers who have either adopted or considered adopting smart-home solutions. The purpose of this survey is to collect quantitative data on user experiences, including pain points, preferences, satisfaction levels, and adoption barriers. By surveying a wide range of consumers across different demographics, this method aims to provide a broad understanding of the key issues impacting user experience in China.
