AVBS1003
Scientific Poster Assessment

Week 4

Preparation 制备

  • Make sure you are up-to-date on lecture content. Lecture 8 (preceding the practical will be particularly helpful in guiding you through assessments)

Learning Outcomes

After this practical activity you should be able to:
  • Have a broader understanding of multiple perspectives for conserving species
  • Work effectively on planning and researching your assessments
  • Be familiar with database sources to find peer-reviewed literature
  • Work in a team with people from diverse backgrounds with inclusiveness, open mindedness, honesty and diligence

Introduction 介绍

During this practical, you will be exploring the zoo and collecting information on various species that you will then be analysing as part of your scientific poster assessment, due in Week 11 (Thursday May). There are specific instructions for the poster assessment on the 'Assessments' page on Canvas. Be sure to follow them closely, only a general overview is provided in these practical notes.

General Overview:

Compare two of the following species: Dromedary camel (Camelus dromedarius); Koala (Phascolarctos cinereus), Freshwater crocodile (Crocodylus johnsoni), Australian Brush-turkey (Alectura lathami), Western honey bee (Apis mellifera).
  • Compare the value of one species over the other taking into consideration:
biodiversity and ecosystem functioning
  • how cultural backgrounds influence decision making
0 inherent intrinsic value
  • State which species should be prioritized for conservation and justify your choice
  • Use peer reviewed literature to do your research
  • Present your findings in a scientific poster
During this practical, you will have the opportunity to view each species and take notes. Around each enclosure there is interpretation providing information about the species, this will assist you with your assessment and give you pointers of the type of information to research. For the brushturkey, there is no specific enclosure, but you will no doubt see many of them as you walk to each of the enclosures. This will rely on more of your own research and discussion with your demos. Note you should then use your own research literature and not Taronga interpretation as references. The interpretation is a good starting point, but the information presented in your poster needs to be from the research you conduct.

Content Section Specifics:
