[ Music ] >> Hello, my name is Barry Kates.

I am Professor of Design at Stanford University and at California College of the Arts in San Francisco.

I'd like to welcome you to what I hope will be your participation in the L Art University Series on the History of Design.

[ Music ] I have for about 20 years been an ongoing fellow at IDEO, which is the world's largest independent design consultancy.

We're located in the heart of Silicon Valley with offices in about nine cities around the world, including Shanghai in China, Tokyo in Japan, and several sites in Europe and the United States.

So I'm pretty deeply immersed in the design world and have a particular interest in the Silicon Valley design context.

In addition to my teaching, I am the author of six books, including most recently, Make It New, which is a history of Silicon Valley design recently translated into simplified Chinese.

Takes the design story back to its beginnings in the 1950s through the present day developments, which are honestly pretty interesting.

Also, Change by Design, which I co-authored with the CEO of IDEO, which is an investigation of design thinking, the mental processes and practices that designers use as they are being incorporated into an ever wider group of practices.

[ Music ] In the history of design course, we are going to be examining the rise of a very specific orientation toward functional objects, which began about 150 or 200 years ago and which goes by the name of design.

So we won't simply be tracing the history of things that human beings have made, which is a two million year story, but a rather specific moment in the history of making in which we came to apply a certain set of strategies to the creation of goods in the era of manufacturing and mass production.

Again, that's what we call design.

Through the course, we will be hearing lectures.

I'll be pointing out some objects.

Some of the lectures will take place in my own home office where I'm surrounded by pretty interesting things.

I'll be suggesting some readings that will help illuminate and deepen some of the things that we're able to discuss in the lectures and perhaps giving you the odd assignment so that you can apply some of these practices to your own interests and your own work.

In the course of it, you'll be developing some skills.

They aren't so much practical skills as thinking skills and you'll learn, I think, a very interesting perspective on the world of the design, the built and the manufactured object and environment in which we live.

And I hope that students who take the course will come away from it with an appreciation of all the things that go into creating the world that we now inhabit.

Thank you.
