Structure: |
Introduction (150) or (50) Paragraph 1 (150) or (200) Paragraph 2 (150) or (200) Paragraph 3 (150) or (200) Conclusion (100) or (50) The above is purely indicative and words are flexible as long as overall the report is no longer than 700+/- 10% = that means your report can be anything between the following: 630/770 words Introduction: Give the reader a clear sense of what they are going to read. You can mention the different points you want to cover, or you can devise a hook introduction, where you pose a problem, issue, or unknown aspect and aim to convince the reader to keep reading so that they can get an answer or insights. Paragraphs: Each paragraph should have a clear focus/point/idea you are developing. Think: what useful information is my reader gaining from reading this specific paragraph? Think about transitions between paragraphs and how you are linking one idea to the previous and the next. Conclusion: What do you want your reader to feel/think at the end of the report? How do you want to leave the reader? Do you want to invite them to find out more? |
Preparatory Activities: By engaging in these activities, you will be gradually producing the building blocks for your report. |
Activity 1: Revise and Recap Revise what we have learned in class, using the resources provided (slides and unit pages) on Canvas. Select one or more of the following questions. What is a portfolio career? Why is understanding Portfolio Career important for aspiring dance professionals? What are soft skills, how do you develop them through dance and how they are important in a professional environment? What is career resilience and how the soft skills you have developed in dance can help you in your life-long professional journey? What sector organisations in the UK support dancers and how do they do so? What kind of training, opportunities, resources they offer? How can dance benefit different groups of people and what can dance activities do in the wider society? Why is important to advocate for dance and engage the wider community in dance? What different forms of employment one can have in the dance sector and what are the pros and cons? |
Explain and write (150-200 words per question) based on what you remember. |
Activity 2: Plan (Brainstorm) |
Choose a topic/s from the list: Career pathways Portfolio career Professional and Soft skills Forms of employment Key sector agencies and the support they offer Brainstorm a few points you want to cover Create questions that address those topics Answer these questions. Example: Assume you want to write a report on different Career Pathways in dance. Brainstorming ideas around the topic and try and phrase them as questions: What are the most commonly-known career pathways for a professionally trained dancer (performing, choreographing, teaching). What are the employability challenges and opportunities with these pathways? What else can I do with a dance degree? How can I use my dance skills and knowledge in a professional environment? What other opportunities are there? Arts administration and production of events/festivals/shows, teaching or facilitating dance with non-professional communities, who can access the various benefits of dance (socialising, creative expression, being healthy/fit, increasing mental wellbeing, fighting isolation), wellbeing sector. Why it is important to look beyond the most commonly-known pathways? Work opportunities? How does the idea of portfolio career links to the ideas of different career pathways? Pros and cons of portfolio career. Freelancing? Pros and cons? Close with an invitation to the reader to consider the wealth of opportunities to access work opportunities as a dance professional |
Your turn: Choose the main topic/topics in your report and brainstorm 5-10 points (you can group them together), phrase these as questions if possible. … … … … … Once you have brainstormed all you want to cover, go back and select what ideas you want to retain. Then, make a plan: order your ideas (if they are not yet). How will they link to each other? |
Activity 2: Plan (Organise) |
The next step is to organise your ideas into main sections/paragraphs: Example: Idea 1: explain what the most obvious career pathways are in dance Idea 2: explain less obvious career pathways in dance Idea 3: explain how a dance professional will often do different kind of jobs in dance (portfolio career), include information on freelancing here. |
Your Turn: Now organise your ideas in sections: Main Topic/s: Idea 1 Idea 2 Idea 3 What is the main message you want your reader to go away with? Write this down here. |
Activity 3: Research and Note Down
|
Using the resources provided on Canvas Unit Pages and your own research (using Icat), do your own research on the topic you are covering. Make notes: What do you want to include in your final report? Save your list of references. Plan to include reference to 3-5 resources overall in your report. |
Include here your unformatted list of references (links to websites, titles of readings) you want to use in your report. Do not worry about formatting it yet. We will do this later. Resource 1-5 |
Resource 1 Add here any quote, specific information, data or others you want to ‘bank’ from your own readings and research. Repeat for Resource 2-5. |
Turn your unformatted list of references into the Harvard System. Formatted list of references I will use in my report: Resource 1-5 |
Activity 5: Write Report Draft |
Write your report, focus on one section at the time, decide what references you want to include. Write a paragraph at the time. Create a first draft for all your paragraphs. Then go back and try to improve each paragraph using the following questions: Is the main idea of this paragraph expressed clearly? How did I support the main idea through information, data, examples, references or other ‘evidence’? Have I referenced correctly according to Harvard system? Guide attached. Are the sentences articulated in a grammatically sound way? Do I need more support with this? How is this paragraph linked to the previous and following one? Read back and check ideas are linking well and flow one into the other meaningfully. |
Activity 6: Write Report Final |
Now that you have your building blocks and a first draft, you are ready to: go back and read and make improvements, proofread rephrase when necessary make sure all your references are correct and follow Harvard make sure ideas link well grammar and syntax are sound your report communicates effectively your ideas to your target readers. |
