thank my entire London staff for their tremendous support given during the frantic months preparing this book, and in particular the incomparable Veronique Henderson for her organisational wizardry and having the nerve to argue with me enough so that the final result is CMB's best; Sue Abbott for her critical editing, and Trevor Castleton, my joint MD, for running things so smoothly in my absence.

Introduction
介紹
- his book is for and about you and how you present yourself every day in your working life. How you look, how you behave and speak, comport yourself in meetings, give a presentation, is as important to your career advancement as your experience and capabilities. This book will help you find out if your image is working for or against you, and, in the latter instance, the many ways in which you can bring about improve- ments.
A poor image is self-defeating. It gets in the way of you projecting your true qualities and abilities. Many of us may wish this wasn't the case, that we should rather be assessed only on our achievements, not on additional, superficial factors such as appearance. But it is a fact of business life today, that you are an essential tool in communicating your ideas. How you 'package' or present yourself speaks volumes about how you value yourself and respect others, about your sense of quality, creativity and professionalism.
The advice I give is intended for women in large corporations as well as small enterprises, for women at the beginning of their careers, midway or returning after a break at home. It also attempts to cross national and cultural boundaries, and to be relevant for both profit-making and non-profit sectors.

dealing with each other. But both men and women also want advice on more personal matters that they are less willing to discuss in mixed groups: body shapes, grooming and the like. So, in the following chapters, woman-to-woman, I can give it to you straight from the hip. The men have their own companion guide about presenting themselves more confidently.
This book explains why you are the message in business and public life, and how others read you. Whatever your image is today and no matter how well it may have worked for you thus far in your career, it might not be enough for you tomorrow, to project what's needed to help you succeed in new arenas.
You will learn how to develop an image that suits your present and possible future position, your lifestyle, and your own personality. Don't fear arbitrary prescriptions. There is no one winning formula: 'Buy this suit, wear this hairstyle, speak this way to be successful.' It is not that simple; nor is it difficult.
You will be actively involved in assessing your present image and how it measures up, whether you think yourself to be below, on a par with or even above your peers when it comes to projecting a confident, attractive image.
Learn what is special about you - and how to capitalise on your assets and play down any liabilities. Most women don't have perfect bodies, so we'll deal honestly with the challenges of needing to look your best, regardless of size. You will learn not only how to make the most of your present shape with clever camouflage tricks but also how to build healthy eating and exercise and, therefore, more energy into your busy life.
There are tips for handling yourself in meetings, and how to score points whether you are in the chair, a participant or presenting. Meetings are vital opportunities for you to show your capabilities, gain visibility and recognition.
If the very thought of standing on your feet to speak in public leaves you weak at the knees, read how you can impress your audience so much with your image, that what you say will be even more authoritative and persuasive. Learn whether your voice is enhancing your presence or sending out wrong signals - fear, underconfidence, or weakness. Once you've assessed any problems, read how to resolve them, following advice that has worked for thousands of talented women like yourself.

WRITING FROM EXPERIENCE
How am I qualified to give such advice? I am an image consultant but also a business manager, strategic planner, speaker and trainer. This is career number three for me, the previous ones having been in government (US) and in management consulting. I have managed budgets of $50 million, directed staff numbering over 100 and am most proud of building from scratch a successful international organisation involving a consultant network of over 1,000. Like many readers, I am also a wife and mother, and in consequence have severe constraints on my personal time to get my own image together (despite it being my job to do so!).
I share my background to show that in addition to consulting many organisations, top multi-nationals and small companies, I have had personal experience of working in business and understand first-hand the challenges encountered as a woman in getting one's image right. When I began my professional career in the 1970s women, in particular, had little idea how to dress and groom themselves to be taken seriously. Nor were there any mentors advising us at our schools, universities, or in the personnel departments that hired us. We were the New Women, and we had a lot to learn.
I wince when I think of some of the outfits I put together when working as a lobbyist on Capitol Hill in Washington, and have no doubt that my appearance on many occasions prevented me from accomplishing what I intended. I looked very young for my age and was working in a predominantly male environment. But I was a serious professional and worked hard to prove it. I made no time for things as 'frivolous' as shopping for clothes or going to the hairdresser, let alone asked for advice on how I might develop a more effective image. Who could I have turned to for advice anyway? If I only knew then what I know now...
IMAGE CONSULTING
Coming to Europe in the early 1980s, I recognised the potential of a new service - image consulting - which had started in the US a few years previously. However, there was a problem: not only was 'image consulting' a new phenomenon but, while Americans might be mad keen on self-

That was 10 years ago. Today, political parties as well as blue-chip companies seek our advice at Color Me Beautiful. Average men and women no longer consider a session with an image consultant is any stranger than going to a beautician for a facial or to a health farm for a welcome retreat.

The Color Me Beautiful network, of 1,000 specially-trained Image Consultants in 28 countries, is devoted to helping people feel more confident about themselves through the image they project. And it was their enthusiastic response that inspired my first book: The Complete Style Guide, written for women working in and outside the home, from teenagers to grandmothers.
Color Me Beautiful
My clients are also responsible for my taking time out to write a second book, this time about what it takes to look effective as well as attractive at work. After a seminar or personal consultation on how to develop an image, most of them take two or three key recommendations on board immediately. They might begin wearing better colours, try new eyeglasses or adopt a more flattering hairstyle. They win compliments from colleagues, and reinforcement from customers almost immediately, and this positive reaction spurs them on to learn even more about making the
