This isn't just about listing what apps you use – it's about understanding the complex web of data you create every day and what it means for your privacy.
If you're a heavy social media user or someone who interacts with lots of digital services daily, focus on documenting a single 12-hour period. If you use technology more moderately, track your interactions over a week to get a representative sample. Start by listing as much as you can remember. Think about data that is captured about you not just by the things you actively opt into, such as apps, but also data that’s collected about you when you go shopping etc. This part should be fairly comprehensive. You don’t need to list everything, but you should consider the broad range of interactions you have with the systems you use, that collect data about you.
Component 2: The AI Perspective (Approximately 500 words)
Put yourself in the position of an AI system analyzing your data trail. What does it know about you, and what could it infer based on what it knows? Consider not just the data you share directly, but the data that it might be able to gather via the permissions you’ve set on your phone.
Depending on how heavy your use is, you can choose to focus on a single area of data sharing (e.g. social media apps, web-browsing), a single device (your phone, your tablet/ipad, your laptop, your fitness watch), or a single area of activity (shopping online/offline, study, entertainment, staying connected with friends). If you decide to narrow down your analysis then it should be detailed. If you decide to provide a broader analysis, make sure that it is not too superficial.
Consider what does your data reveal about your:
Behavioural patterns
Social connections
Personal characteristics
Physical world behaviours
Socio-Economic Status
When considering the information you share and patterns that this information reveals, you should consider whether the systems you share data with have access only to the system you give it via that tool or application, or whether it also offers other products that you interact with? For example, Meta and Google offer more than one tool/product. If you use more than one product, how might this data be pieced together? Think about connections between different types of data.
Component 3: Privacy Reflection (Approximately 800 words)
Looking at the data that you share and that patterns and behaviours it reveals, what makes you uncomfortable if shared? Why? What patterns in your life would you prefer to keep private?
Consider what Australian privacy law actually protects and what data it classes as sensitive. Compare it to other places (especially GDPR in Europe). Then reflect on whether the law protects what you think it should protect?
Don't just list laws - explain how they relate to YOUR data you mapped earlier. You don’t need to disclose anything to us that is personal to you, for example “I wouldn’t want the system knowing I had depression”. Instead you can say “I wouldn’t want the system knowing my health information.”
Component 4: Platform Deep Dive (Approximately 500 words)
Select one digital service you use regularly (e.g., Instagram, Netflix, Spotify, or your banking app, do not use TikTok as we use this example in class). Really dig into their privacy practices. Find their Terms & Conditions and Privacy Policy and read them thoroughly (yes, actually read them!). Then, provide an overview of your findings with regards to the following:
What can they do with your data?
Who can they share it with?
Where is your data stored?
What rights do you have over your data?
Can you delete your data?
Is your data sent overseas?

Then reflect on the following:
Did you read these when you signed up?
Would knowing this information have changed your decision to use the service?
What surprised you most?
Component 5: AI Impact Analysis (Approximately 1,000 words)
Think about the data that you share with different organisations, and reflect on the following:
What representation/bias issues are there with your data?
Link to course readings on bias in AI systems Example: "My Netflix viewing history shows a preference for English-language content, which could reinforce Western cultural bias in recommendation systems, as discussed in Topic X’s reading/seminar/etc.
Example Analysis: "My Instagram data shows I mainly interact with English-language content about technology and cooking. According to Topic X's readings on training data bias and specifically Y’s (2023) article, this could mean AI systems trained on my data would have significant gaps in understanding other interests I pursue offline..."
How might bias affect AI's understanding of you?
What assumptions might it make?
Can you think of some assumptions that a system could viably make about you that might be wrong?
What would be the consequences of that (for you, and more broadly).
Make sure you reference course materials on AI decision-making. For example: "Based on Topic X’s lecture on xxxxx, the xxxx patterns in my data could lead to assumptions about xxxx..."
How might your data be used by AI systems and to do what?
What would be the implications of this use (think about yourself, but also more broadly about other stakeholders).
Do any of these issues concern you?
If no, why not?
If yes, how should we address these concerns and why is that the best method?
Through legislation? (at the Local, National or Supra-National level?)
Through our personal behaviour?
Through industry codes of conduct?
