The summative assessments consist of 2 x 1500 word mini essays (50% each) and contribute to 100% of the assessment for this module. Mini essay 1 assesses your understanding of cognitive psychology. Mini essay 2 assesses your understanding of developmental psychology. Both mini essays assess your ability to identify relevant theoretical and empirical research, demonstrate your knowledge of these, and demonstrate your ability to weigh up evidence critically. Mini essay 2 also requires you to demonstrate an understanding of the implications of developmental theory for educational policy and practice. See pages 4-6 for more detail and guidance.

This assignment has been designed to assess your understanding of theory and research related to a specific area of cognitive psychology. The content covered in the weeks indicated as cognitive on the module will be most useful to you when completing this assessment. The topics outlined in the list above are intentionally broad; we do not expect you to cover every aspect of the topic within 1500 words but instead to be selective about which aspect of the topic you will focus on, linking this to relevant cognitive theory and research. For example, if you select ‘memory’ as the topic, you might focus on working memory, or if you choose ‘attention’, you might focus on selective attention.

It will be important to begin your essay with a clear introduction that outlines which topic you have selected and specifies what cognitive theory/theories you will be drawing on; part of the task is about identifying relevant cognitive theory that fits with your topic. You can draw on one or two cognitive theories and apply this to your topic. We would recommend quality over quantity when it comes to selecting cognitive theories, and therefore would not advise that you draw on more than two cognitive theories in detail in this essay. It will be important to focus on specific cognitive theories that relate to your chosen topic, and depending on the topic, it might be that the topic and the cognitive theory/theories are very closely aligned, e.g., metacognition as the topic and Flavell’s metacognitive theory as the theory. Alternatively, you might select a cognitive theory not presented as part of the weekly topic content and apply it to your understanding of your chosen topic. Crucially, consider critically how the cognitive theory/theories you have identified help to explain the topic.

The essay asks you to critically evaluate both cognitive theory and recent research in relation to your topic, therefore it will be important to include both. Try to locate empirical research that is relevant to the topic and the cognitive theory/theories discussed. By ‘recent’, we mean research published in the last 20 years or so. It will be important to draw on a wide range of empirical research to help develop your argument(s). Considering some of the research methods used in cognitive psychological research generally and/or some of the studies you refer to is also recommended.

This assignment has been designed to assess your understanding of developmental psychology in relation to a particular aspect of development. The content covered in the weeks indicated as developmental on the module will be most useful to you when completing this assessment, as well as some of the developmental theories introduced in Week 7.

Remember to include a clear introduction in which you outline the chosen topic and developmental theory/theories you will be drawing on, along with signposting the reader to the implications for educational policy and practice that will be discussed later in the essay.

Both the topic and developmental theory/theories should be discussed throughout the essay. As with summative assessment 1, depending on the topic you choose, it might be that the topic and the developmental theory/theories are very closely aligned, e.g. attachment (topic) and attachment theory (theory). This is fine but it will be helpful to acknowledge this clearly in the introduction and ensure you differentiate clearly between the theory and the topic throughout your essay. Alternatively, you might select a developmental theory not presented as part of the weekly topic content and apply it to your understanding of your chosen topic.

A main part of the essay title requires you to critically analyse developmental theory in relation to one of the topics outlined. You might focus on one developmental theory or a couple of theories that relate to your chosen topic. As with summative assessment 1, we would not advise drawing on more than two theories in relation to your topic, as this might not allow enough depth to your analysis. You might find that you opt for more ‘classic’ theories covered in Week 7 of the module, or that it is more pertinent to analyse theory or theories that are more closely concerned with your chosen topic and mentioned in relevant “developmental”-themed weeks. Rather than simply explaining or describing the developmental theory/theories and its application to your topic, you will need to engage critically with the theory/theories. This should be done both by interrogating existing empirical research that supports or refutes the theory/theories and by evaluating the strengths and limitations of the theory/theories you have selected. You might like to consider how and whether the theory/theories you’ve chosen help to advance or detract from our understandings of the topic.

Another aim of the essay is to discuss implications for educational policy and practice. Here, you can discuss implications for both educational policy and practice, or focus solely on either educational policy or practice. It is important in this part of the essay to make links back to the theory or theories you have analysed in the first part of the essay. In this sense, you are not necessarily discussing the implications for educational policy and practice of the topic, but rather the implications of the theory/theories you’ve drawn on and applied to the topic. We would expect to see a range of research studies included in this section to help support your discussion of educational implications.

Your essay should end with a clear and succinct conclusion that synthesises the main arguments discussed. You might also comment on how policy makers and/or education professionals could make use of the developmental theory/theories discussed, i.e. how might the theory inform policy/practice?

Each mini essay should be submitted as a separate assignment on the dates highlighted at the beginning of this document. Each mini essay should be clearly titled with the topic clearly indicated. At the end of each essay you should indicate the word count for that essay and the references included within that mini essay.
