Since the release of Apple’s first-generation iPad in 2010, tablet computers, with large screens and high portability, have quickly attracted customers’ attention. The unprecedented success of iPad shows the huge potential of the tablet computer market. Many digital brands have followed suit and joined the market. The global tablet computer market has developed rapidly ever since. College students are one of the major consumer groups, so to understand their usage and demand for tablet computers is critical to the further development of the tablet computer market.

This report aims at college students from SISU. Through information collection, questionnaire survey, and data analysis, it tries to comprehensively understand SISU students usage and demand for tablet computers. So that it can find out the existing problems of tablet computers among SISU students and analyze the solutions. Thus, advice can be given accordingly to tablet computer manufacturers, in order to create a win-win situation for both student benefit and business profitability.

Since the first launch in 2010, Apple’s iPad has dramatically invigorated the tablet computer market. The world has seen a drastic emerge in the tablet computer marketmore and more computer brands are marching into this field to take a share. From then on, tablet computers have gradually taken the place of laptops and desktop computers, and gained ever-growing popularity in modern people’s lives.

Nowadays, technology has become heavily integrated in college setting; an increasing number of college students are using tablet computers for the purpose of academic study as well as entertainment. Thus, college student group is an essential part of the tablet computer market. In order to provide better services for them, it is important to understand the demands and requirements college students have for tablet computers. Therefore, this survey seeks to better understand SISU students, and give recommendations to tablet manufacturers according to SISU students’ preferences: what special features SISU students are seeking in tablet computers and in what ways tablet computers can further utilize their lives.

2.1 The Survey Procedure

This survey totally involves 313 random SISU students. It lasted one month and a half to collect the data. The respondents were all individually interviewed online, based on a standard questionnaire designed in advance.

The whole questionnaire contains 16 individual questions that can be further divided into four sections.

The first section is about the respondents’ background characteristics, such as their grade, gender, and personal ownership of a tablet computer. It includes question 1 to 3. The second section is designed for the respondents’ buying preferences for a tablet computer, aiming to find out if there is any fixed pattern in their likes or dislikes. It contains question 4 to 9. The third section is about their daily usage of tablet computers. It comprises question 10 to 12. The last section is about the respondents’ views and suggestions for tablet computers according to their experiences. It contains question 13 to 16.

The questionnaire covers four types of questions.

The first type requires respondents to choose a single response from the options that have been provided for them. Most questions in the questionnaire belongs to this category, which accounts for 10 of 16. Question 1 and 3 have only two options. Question 4 and 15 provide three options and the rests of the 6 questions all provide four or more options. The second type of question requires respondents to select more than one option from the given choices. And question 12 to 14 belong to this category. Each one of them has 5 or 6 options. The third type of question asks respondents to sequence the choices from top to bottom according to their level of importance. Question 5 and 11 belong to this category, each containing 8 and 6 options respectively. The last type is gap filling question which is optional.

The questionnaire was conducted in a strict manner. Throughout the survey, great care had been exercised to ensure that all respondents interviewed matched the sampling profile and all the other requirements stipulated in the research design. All the data collected were true and valid. Here is a summary of the survey results.

A total of 313 questionnaires are distributed among students in SISU. Table 1 and Table 2 show the respondents’ personal conditions.

Table 2 represents the overall class standing of respondents surveyed. 6.07% of them fall into the category of freshmen students and 7.35% are sophomore. The majority of the respondents are made up of the junior student groups and senior student groups, accounting for 21.41% and 57.83% respectively. The remaining 7.35% belong to graduate students.

Figure 1 presents the percentage of respondents who have used tablet computers as compared to those who have not. 74.76% of respondents are currently using or have used a tablet computer before. Hence, 25.24% of the respondents have never used tablet computers before.

Figure 2 illustrates the intention of buying a tablet computer for those candidates who have not used one before. Out of the 79 respondents who have not used a tablet computer, 41.77% claim that they would like to purchase one in the long term, 30.38% would like to purchase in the near future, while the rest 27.85% do not have the intention to buy a tablet computer yet.

Figure 3 shows the average composite score of the influencing factors of buying an ideal tablet computer. Brand and price are the first two factors on the respondents’ mind, each weighing 6.67 and 6.19. Next, model and style almost have the same score as system operation and software, respectively scoring 4.1 and 4.04. Then there are screen size and resolution, for which the score is 2.71, slightly more than customer feedback and evaluation, which score 2.03. And at last, the least frequent factor to take into account is advertising and celebrity effect, only scoring 0.33.

Figure 4 shows the respondents’ most preferred brands of tablet computer. Apparently, Apple takes the lead, accounting for 78.27% of the respondents’ choice. Following Apple is Huawei, taking up 10.54%. Rest of the brands are Xiaomi, Honor, Microsoft, Samsung, Lenovo and other, each holding 2.24%, 1.6%, 2.88%, 0.96%, 1.92% and 1.6% of the respondents respectively.

Figure 5 shows the respondents’ most favored price range of a tablet computer. From figure 5, the pie chart illustrates that 50.16% of the respondents choose the price range of 2000-3000 yuan. More than a quarter, 26.67% of the respondents choose the range of 3000-4000 yuan. 7.67% of the responses fall into the range of 4000-5000 yuan. The percentage of respondents who choose below 2000 yuan is 6.07%. Only 2.88% of the respondents choose to buy a tablet computer for more than 5000 yuan. Also, 6.39% of the respondents admit that they will purchase a tablet computer regardless of the price.

Figure 6 shows the respondents’ preference for the ideal size of tablet computers. From the pie chart, 33.87% of the respondents prefer a tablet computer with a 9.7 inches touch screen, following which is 7.9 inches, taking up nearly a quarter of the pie—24.60%. Also, quite a number of respondents express no special requirements about the screen size, totaling up to 17.89%. 15.97% of the respondents have chosen the screen of 10.5 inches. The biggest size—above 12 inches, and the smallest—below 5 inches are the least favored ones, each only has 5.75% and 1.92% of the responses respectively.

Figure 7 illustrates the preference for different storage spaces of tablet computers. The most popular size is 128 G, which takes up 32.27% of the respondents. Nearly the same as the first one, 64 G also has 30.67% of the choice. Next two are 32 G and 256 G or more, each has 15.02% and 13.43% of the respondents’ choice respectively. The smallest storage, 16 G or less, only gets 0.96% of the choice. Also, 7.67% of the respondents show no special requirements for storage spaces.

Figure 8 shows the average time each respondent spends on using his or her tablet computers. Nearly up to half of the respondents choose 2-4 hours, taking up 47.86% of the pie chart. 38.89% of the respondents only use their tablets for 2 hours or even less. Only 2.56% of the respondents use their tablet for 6 hours or more. 10.68% of the respondents use their tablet for 4 to 6 hours every day.

Figure 9 illustrates the daily usage condition of tablet computers by the respondents, according to their sequence of importance. Study takes the lead as the most used feature of a tablet computer, scoring 5.26. Closely after study is entertainment, which also gets the high score of 4.84. Social Network scores 2.62, almost twice as work section, which only gets 1.36. The least mentioned feature is creation, scoring only 0.56.

Figure 10 illustrates the benefits tablet computers have brought to the respondents’ daily lives. The majority of respondents– 77.78%, admit that tablet computers’ bigger screens enable them to have better entertainment experience. Closely after that, 75.64% of the respondents think that paperless study makes it more convenient for them. Slightly more than half of the respondents– 53.42% give credit to multitasking at the same time. Only a little less than half of the respondents– 41.03%, confess that tablet computers help them to make creative works easier. The rest 36.32% of the respondents think highly of the fast transfer and processing feature of tablet computers.

Figure 11 illustrates the reasons of respondents who do not want to buy a tablet computer. Out of the respondents who have not used a tablet computer before and shows no intentions for buying one either, 86.36% of them expresses no need for tablet computers. Nearly half, 41.03% of the respondents owe this to their personal preference. Only 18.18% think the tablets have too few features to satisfy their needs, and the rest 31.82% are not so content with the price, which is a little too high for them.

Out of all respondents, the most wanted improvement of a tablet computer is portability: 72.84% of the answers are wishing tablets to be more portable and have lighter bodies. The figures for these following three aspects are very similar: 47.92% for interaction with more devices, 47.28% for bigger screen, and 46.96% for more variety in applications. Also, quite a lot of respondents–64.86%, asks for a better equipment with more physical accessories.

Figure 13 shows the percentage of respondents who believe that tablet computers can replace laptops and the ones who do not. According to the figures shown by Figure 13, it is clear that nearly four fifths, 79.55% of the respondents do not believe that tablets can take the place of laptops. Yet, 19.17% of the respondents believe that tablets can do everything that laptops can, yet more portable. And 1.28% of the respondents express other opinions.

In terms of the intention of using tablet computers, the survey results demonstrate that an overwhelming majority of the respondents are using or have used tablet computers before. And as for the respondents who have not used a tablet computer yet, a large percentage of them report strong intention and need to purchase one in the future. Still, a few of the respondents show no interest at all in buying a tablet computer. The reason is simply that they do not need one. Because they already have other types of electronic devices which have the exact same functions as tablet computers. Also, some smaller percentage of respondents owe the reason to the high price of tablet computers, too few applications, and their personal preference as well.

Brand and price factor belong to the highest rank; model and style, system operation and software belong to the second highest rank, with scores two points lower than the first one; screen size and resolution, customer feedback and evaluation belong to the third rank, also with scores two points lower than the previous one; advertising and celebrity effect ranks the last, with two points lower than the third rank.

The average composite score of the sequencing question is automatically calculated by the questionnaire system according to the ranking of all the respondents’ options. It reflects the comprehensive ranking of the options. The higher the score, the higher the overall ranking. The calculation method is: average comprehensive score = (Σ frequency × weight) / the number of respondents.

As for the rest of brands, there is not much preference: Xiaomi, Honor, Microsoft, Samsung, Lenovo and etc., each of which accounting for only a little of all the choices. Interestingly, Apple also has the highest price among all the tablet computer brands.

Price factor is also important to the customers in their decision-making process of purchasing an electronic device, especially for college students who do not have much earnings themselves. The results show that exactly half of the respondents have chosen the relatively low price range of 2000-3000 yuan. One quarter have chosen the moderate price range of 3000-4000 yuan. As for the extremely low and extremely high prices, there are not too many followers. Some small percentage of respondents also admit that they will buy their favorable tablet computer regardless of the price, as long as they are satisfied with the product itself.

As for the screen size and storage volume, the results are more evenly distributed. The most favorable size is the middle one—not too small, not too large: 9.7 inches. On the contrary, the smallest size and the largest one are the most unfavorable. In between the two extremes, the smaller model of 7.9 inches is more popular than the bigger one of 10.5 inches. Yet a decent number of respondents report no special requirement for the screen size, or to say that screen size does not matter to them in terms of daily use. The patterns are similar in the case of storage: the most preferred storage size is 128G, closely followed by 64G, which are the two moderate choices in the middle. As for the bigger size 256 G and smaller size 32 G, some respondents still show their preference. But the smallest one, 16G or less, almost gets no choice. Also, a small number of people do not take the storage problem as an important factor to consider.

Social network and work have got some votes as well, though not as much as study and entertainment. They can use the SNS apps to chat with their family and friends, or even make a video call. As for work, they are able to send and receive e-mails and they can use Word, Excel, and Powerpoint on tablet computers as well. Only a few respondents report their usage of creative works, which is the least common usage mentioned of all. They can draw with a stylus pencil and edit videos on their tablet computers.

As for study, tablet computers have taken the place of books, and getting all the materials online makes study more convenient for them. The split screen design and stylus pencil have also gained some votes as well, a little more than the fast transfer feature. The split screen design makes it possible for the respondents to multitask at the same time. With a stylus pencil, it is a lot easier to do some creative work like drawing on a tablet computer, even better than laptops and desktop computers. All these different features together make up the tablet computer as a whole to utilize the respondents’ lives.

Portability and physical accessories stand out as the most and second most unsatisfied features. Respondents want their tablet computers to have lighter bodies and be more portable to carry around. They also want their tablet computers to be equipped with more physical accessories for easier input method, such as a stylus pencil, keyboard etc. To be fair, the screen size, application variety, and device interaction are just as important. A tablet computer has to have more applications to satisfy its users, or else the user will turn to other electronic devices with more features. A tablet computer’s interaction with more devices is also needed, such as projectors, cameras etc. Some respondents also report that their tablets have short very battery life, not enough to last through a day of study. Only when a tablet computer meets all the customers’ need, can it be further improved in the respect of customer satisfaction.

When talking about the battle between tablet computers and laptops, the result is just a little bit cruel to say: the majority of the respondents are not optimistic about tablet computers as compared to laptops, because there are still some limitations of tablets—something that laptops are able to do with ease but tablets cannot do. Some respondents point out that the input method of their tablet computers is not as efficient as laptops because they do not have a physical keyboard. Just typing on the touch screen makes it hard for them to input text fast enough. On the other hand, some of respondents still think highly of tablet computers, because they are just as powerful as laptops yet more portable. If there’s any situation without a laptop, then a tablet computer may be the best alternative for it.

On the basis of the survey findings, a number of conclusions concerning SISU students’ need, preference, and usage of tablet computers have been drawn thence. They are as presented below.

1. Tablet computers are very popular among most SISU students. Out of all the students interviewed by the questionnaire, only a small proportion of the respondents show no intention in buying a tablet computer, and the majority of respondents either have already bought one or are planning to buy one in the future. This figure shows that the penetration rate of tablet computers is very high among SISU students. This also reflexes that SISU students’ purchasing intention is quite obvious. Tablet computers have already changed the way students learn new knowledge. They are viewed as a revolutionary platform for learning and communicating in that they provide a both portable and interactive method of consuming content, entirely paperless, which is highly recommended for the purpose of environment protection. The use of technology in education has impacted the way that students learn information, and the overall availability of academic material. However, the reason that some of the respondents do not want to buy a tablet computer is they already have an alternative electronic device for it, such as mobile phones and laptops. They think that tablet computers can be easily replaced by other electronic devices. This is a quite important issue that stands in the way of tablet computers’ further development.

2. According to the statistics, brand name stands out from all the influencing factors to consider when deciding to purchase a tablet computer. Apple, with no doubt, is customer’s favorite brand. It is partly because there is some kind of hidden understanding that an esteemed brand name is the best guarantee for the good quality of its product. People believe in that brand name with no strings attached. Therefore, they believe in all the products that belong to the brand. However, sometimes price factor can go against the brand factor. As the more famous the brand is, the more expensive its product can be. This dilemma also needs to be addressed to ensure better sales of tablet computers among SISU students.

So that it can be more portable and convenient for students to carry with.

Although a lot of students have bought a tablet for the purpose of study at first, they may end up playing games or watching TV series all the time. The multitasking function of tablet computer is also popular among SISU students when they have to watch a video lesson and take notes as well.

So, the split-screen design of a tablet computer will be very helpful in SISU students’ effective learning process. When a SISU student is thinking about purchasing a tablet computer, he or she might prefer the type of tablet computer with split-screen design.

In the case of college students, tablets are a great way of studying anywhere without the limit of time or situation. Tablets are much lighter than a laptop yet so versatile in functionality. Perfectly portable from halls to seminar, they turn on quickly and provide instant access to the Internet. These features are all strengths of tablet computers that need to be further strengthened.

7. Develop the input method. The most obvious difference between as tablet computer and a laptop is the lack of a keyboard. Tablets rely solely on a touch interface on the screen for all input. This is fine when it involves simply pointing, dragging or tapping to navigate around a program. The problems came in when one has to input text into a program, which happens a lot for college students. Since tablets have no keyboards, users are required to type on virtual keyboards that have various layouts and designs, which makes it difficult to type as fast or as accurately. Users do have the option of adding an external Bluetooth keyboard to make more like a laptop, but it adds costs and peripherals that must be taken in with the tablet. So, methods to solve this problem should be further developed, such as writing with a stylus pencil and automatically turn into text, or portable keyboard that goes with the tablet case, to help SISU students have better experience of inputting text in class.

So, tablet computers should be a powerful yet highly creative bit of kit whose versatility is only limited by imagination. Only in this way, can a tablet computer successfully attract SISU students’ attention.
